Wayang Golek

Wayang Golek, Indonesia

This is a traditional wood puppet called wayang golek, used to perform popular stories about Indonesian legends or history.

Like you can see, the puppet is placed into a glass frame to cover it from dust. I'm sorry about the cluttered items behind. I took this photo with my mobile camera at my husband's office which was in renovation, but I didn't dare to move anything...

    The model ship behind adds some interest to the figure, so maybe it's good you didn't move anything!

    I love puppets like that.
    I have long been fascinated by folk stories in our Southeast Asian region. I saw a similar puppet in Malaysia and bought one. I promised to myself I'll get one in every SEA country that I go to. I hope I get to visit Indonesia soon :)

    P.S. My good friend Ifeh sent me her own Kebaya as a gift years ago.

    Nice beautiful sepia photo. Over here we called this "Wayang Kulit", almost the same..

    That is a serious puppet, so detailed in its carving. A puppeteer working one of these large figures is an artist as well, making the puppet look so life-like in action...
