When The Ducks Come Marching By

Thursday, June 11, 2009
I love being around mother nature, because I find it so relaxing. Taking photos of plants and animals is a real pleasure to the soul. Although with the last one I'm still having a hard time. Even if I seem ready to obarmate the critters, they keep on escaping my lens. LOL

If you read my post We Have Company, you know that there are a lot of critters coming to our area. Yesterday morning, I decided to approach some ducks who were spending their time at the field near our backyard. Some were searching for food, swimming in a mud pond or just taking a walk around. I assumed that they were having a great time all over the place.

Then, an old man came along with a bucket in his hand. All of the ducks were suddenly lining up and marching passed me on a path, following him. It made me quite excited! There must be food in the bucket, and I was about to watch the man feed the ducks.

I mean, why else would all the ducks gather around the man? Waiting in full anticipation, like this. I really could see their assiduity, don't you agree.

That's why I got so perplexed, when I saw the man lifting up his body again without doing anything? I must have missed out something! He was just standing there, staring at the mud pond, staring at me and then finally asking if I was taking some shots of the ducks. A nod was my only answer. My brain stood still.

One thing is for sure. You should never hire me as a journalist. Not only have I forgotten to ask the man about what he had done. That definitely would have been the simplest and easiest way to answer my curiosity! But, I also forgot to take a final shot for this story. The one were the man was standing there, staring at me... or the one were the whole duck gang was dismissing itself. You have to forgive me, because I am still an opsimath at photography. I'm gonna duck out now. LOL

I have finally gathered my courage to join the literature meme of my friend Quilly called Three Word Thursday. I decided to become an opsimath on this, too. Please, bare with me.
This week's words are:
opsimath – a person who becomes a student or learner late in life
obarmate – to arm against
assiduity – constant or close application or attention, particularly to some business or enterprise; diligence

hahaha....what do these convoluted words do to our everyday ordinary life but makes it more thrilling and exciting?

Whoa, another lesson to learn from my dear friend Rosidah.

I take note of those links Rosidah. Now, I can come online checking meanings and spelling instead of standing up and open my Oxford Dictionary. Saves me time?

Very interesting as always.

Great post for those Marching Ducks. I wonder where's their drums? Quack! Quack! Quack!

hahaha

Rosidah, I think you did a wonderful job with your story. And how clever of you to add an idiom at the end!

Did you ever discover what the old man was doing with so many ducks? Ducks and geese imprint (become attached to) the first thing/person they see when they are hatched, so it is possible that the man is raising them and that the bucket really did have food for them.

Good post!

Great post Rodidah, you are such a good meme player!

No, I really don't know what he did. I am curious why the ducks didn't approach the bucket at all. Thank you for your explanation, Carleen. I think it explains the ducks assiduity to the man. I assume it's like they were looking at their beloved father. As weird as it seems, that makes sense.

Yoohoo! You did a great job! And you combined three different challenges seamlessly! Very impressive, indeed.

There is a wild bird sanctuary near our home, and recently Amoeba and I took a bread sack full of crusts down to feed the ducks. They met us about a block from the sanctuary and followed Amoeba squawking, because they recognized the sack! Had to be the sack. They had never seen us before!

I echo Thom! You did a great job here... ;)

Great post, Rosidah! I learned some new words! Interesting story about the ducks, wonder why they followed that man. Have a great day!

Wow..three memes in one post..Great job. I love ducks so I love this post. I would bet the ducks are following because of some food. I sometimes give the mallards on the pond some cracked corn and if they see the cup, they come running. I also loved the article that you linked too. A mallard riding shotgun in a truck. That is so neat. Thank you for participating in Nature Notes and Think Green...

I love ducks, too - I'm just waiting for the neighborhood ducks to come around with their babies to clean up under my birdfeeders, like they do every summer!

Fun post, Rosidah!

Hi Rosidah, I think the ducks are saying, "follow the leader". Nice post. Have a great weekend too!

Enjoyed your pics. It's so cute for the ducklings to follow the leader and reminds me of a nursery rhyme that makes me smile.

I enjoyed your story about the ducks. They must be following the bucket. The photos were great with the story. I like the one with the man with the bucket withthe ducks following, it has the feel of an old time photo.
